Nassau

NassauNassau, the capital of The Bahamas, is located in the island of New Providence and has 70% of the total population of the Bahamas. It is connected to the neighboring Paradise Island by Harbor bridges and retains many of its typical pastel-colored British colonial buildings.

Founded in 1670, Nassau was firstly called Charles Town in honor of the England’s king Charles II. It was totally burned in 1684 by the Spanish during their frequent wars with the English and rebuilt with the name of Nassau in 1695. This name derives from the town of Nassau in Germany.

Thousands of people visit daily the town of Nassau to shop, dine, and to enjoy the tropical climate and sea. The new Straw Market is an important tourist destination in the center of the city with lots of crafts and folk art for which Nassau has been recognized as UNESCO Creative City. Cable beach, with its golden sands, casinos and all-inclusive resorts, is well known as the hotel district of New Providence.
