CartagenaThe city of Cartagena was founded as a major port in the Caribbean region on the northern coast of Colombia in 1533. It is the capital of the Bolivar Department, a very beautiful fishing town and a popular beach destination, with a historic old town with beautiful colonial architecture. Cartagena is also one of the safest place in Colombia, with its popular port of call for cruise ships.

Cartagena was during the colonial area a key port for the import of African slaves and the export of Peruvian silver to Spain. It stands as the fifth largest city in Colombia and the second-largest in the region after Barranquilla. Cartagena is dominated by the industry, the tourism and the maritime (commerce) sectors.
